OTTAWA, Feb. 12 /CNW Telbec/ - The youngest ever Chief Commissioner for Scouts Canada will present a cheque for approximately $125,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Fund on Tuesday, February 16.
In a nationwide call almost unprecedented in the history of Scouting, Chief Commissioner Steve Kent urged all Canadian Scouts to action to assist the people affected by the devastation in Haiti.
The message was blasted to the almost 100,000 members of Canada's premier youth organization shortly after news of the earthquake reached Canada.
"We have all been saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, leaving tens of thousands feared dead and millions of residents displaced," Kent said. "There are many organizations providing critical aid including water, food, shelter and medical care. We would like to call on all of our members to help in these efforts."
Response from Canada's Scouts was swift, dramatic and everything one would expect from an organization whose longstanding priority is helping those in need. From all corners of the nation money from Scout groups came pouring in. Some groups submitted the weekly dues that they would ordinarily save up for camping trips; others quickly organized impromptu and imaginative fundraisers.
Funds collected in the span of a few short days amounted to approximately $125,000, and will go directly to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Fund. Chief Commissioner Kent will present this cheque to Dave Fraser, Red Cross President, Ottawa Area (and part of the Red Cross International Disaster Team) on Tuesday, February 16 at Scouts Canada's national headquarters in Ottawa. Media are advised to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the presentation. There will be opportunity for photos and interviews with Chief Commissioner Steve Kent.
