Maverick Leadership by Hugh Latif is designed as a practical guide for general managers, entrepreneurs and CEOs who are already in business, and for business students who are just beginning their careers.
"This is a practical manual on the key elements of good business management," says Latif, a former executive with Dun & Bradstreet who has spent the past 20 years as an independent advisor to businesses and organizations.
Maverick Leadership is an easy-to-read 224 pages with 23 chapters that deal with specific aspects of management. This includes such critical areas as People Management, Leadership, Pricing of Products and Services, HR Selection and Recruitment, Team Building, and Succession Planning. The book also gets into such things as decision making, the value of advisory boards, and how to keep ahead of the competition.
Latif's personal experience in virtually every major sector of business and industry – from manufacturing to retail, from business services to distribution – comes across in a conversational style that can be likened to two business professionals meeting over coffee or tea with the more senior one acting as a mentor. Latif says he hopes it will be valuable to not only people in business, but to young people who are just getting into management, to those looking to be promoted, and to anyone who wants insights into proven methods that can be applied right away.
In the book's Introduction, Latif says that strong leadership and team building are two of the most important keys to business success. He also mentions what he considers the top three things that contribute to personal, professional and business success. They are: 1) passion, 2) integrity and high ethics, and 3) a willingness to embrace change.
Latif has operated his Toronto-based management consulting practice – Hugh Latif & Associates – since 1996. He has handled over 350 consulting assignments for small and medium-size enterprises that are privately owned in every sector of business. Prior to that he held senior executive positions with the Dun & Bradstreet–A.C. Nielsen Group in Canada, Italy, Brazil and France. At D&B, he specialized in turnarounds.
Latif serves on many private advisory boards and is a member of the Toronto Board of Trade, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the Italian Chamber of Commerce, the BDC Consulting Group which is a division of The Business Development Bank of Canada, and other organizations. He speaks several languages fluently which has served him well in international assignments around the world.
