KPMG recognized for sustainability efforts

Firm named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2010

TORONTO, May 31 /CNW/ - Tania Carnegie, National Director of Community Leadership, KPMG LLP, will be one of over 20 panelists presenting at the Green Employers 2010 Conference, at the Fairmount Royal York Hotel. More than 15 CEOs and senior-level executives and winners of the Canada's Greenest Employers awards will also be present at this event.

"Sustainability is a priority at KPMG," said Carnegie. "As a firm with offices in over 30 communities across Canada, we recognize the positive environmental impact of our operations."

Launched in 2007, the Canada's Greenest Employers competition is organized by the editors of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project. This special designation recognizes the employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. These employers have developed exceptional earth-friendly initiatives, and are attracting people to their organizations because of their environmental leadership.

Some of the reasons why KPMG was selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers 2010 include:

    - internationally, KPMG's "Global Green Initiative" commits the firm to
reduce its international carbon footprint by 25 percent by the end of
this year (compared to the baseline year of 2007) through energy
conservation and use of renewable energy

    - in Canada, the firm established a Environmental Performance
Initiative (EPI) in 2007 that formalized its commitment to address
its Canada-wide environmental performance and programs - with a focus
on paper usage, waste reduction and lowering the firm's overall
        carbon footprint

    - recently moved into its new head office in downtown Toronto that is
being built to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Gold standard - a landmark skyscraper designed to consume
40 percent less energy than comparable buildings

    - the firm has implemented formal paper reduction strategies for its
day-to-day operations, moving to double-sided printing (where
possible) as a default as well as introducing electronic only
communications for billing and faxing - saving millions of sheets of
        paper every year

Additional KPMG accomplishments over the past year include:

    - Revised sourcing policies for the paper it uses. Print and copy paper
must contain at least 30% recycled content, be Canadian sourced and
        come from sustainably managed forests.

    - Enhancing measurement of emissions related to business travel, and
aims to achieve its reduction target through IT alternative to
        travel.

    - Continued offering of two energy efficiency programs to support KPMG
people to reduce their footprint at home, including defraying a
        portion of the cost.

"Our commitment to environmental leadership doesn't end with this award," said Carnegie. "One of KPMG's core values is its commitment to the communities in which we live and work, and which includes reducing our firm's overall impact on the environment through the implementation of our new business strategy."

Each employer nominated for this award is evaluated by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers in terms of: (1) the unique environmental initiatives and programs they have developed; (2) the extent to which they have been successful in reducing the organization's own environmental footprint; (3) the degree to which their employees are involved in these programs and whether they contribute any unique skills; and (4) the extent to which these initiatives have become linked to the employer's public identity and whether they attract new people to the organization.
