IGALA 8 - Unique Gender Conference Explores The Sexual Politics of Language

VANCOUVER, May 22, 2014 /CNW/ - Dr. Allyson Jule, co-chair, IGALA 8, announces the imminent commencement of the 8th International Gender and Language Association Conference to be held June 5 – 7, 2014 at Simon Fraser University, Harbour Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Featuring keynotes such as veteran CBC Journalist and Broadcaster Chantal Hébert, the event will see 200 academic authorities from around the world gathering to discuss how the study of linguistics informs and enlightens our understanding of gender in society. Noted Canadian storyteller Ivan Coyote will also be a featured speaker.

The relationship between language and gender has recently become a critical centerpiece in prominent nationwide efforts to encourage leadership among women and girls. The Ban Bossy campaign launched by the Girl Scouts of America and endorsed by international celebrities and leaders such as Michelle Obama and Beyonce Knowles, puts forward the notion that girls who demonstrate leadership traits are pejoratively labeled "bossy" which may smother leadership aspirations. A cornerstone of the Ban Bossy message is research showing that boys speak up to 9 times more than girls in the classroom.

"Our scholars are working at the forefront of critical breakthroughs in our understanding of gender in society with broad implications for education, politics, law, family, and the workplace," said conference co-chair and author of Shushing the Girls, Dr. Allyson Jule. "This event marks the first and possibly the only time IGALA will gather in Canada."

Day passes to the event are available for $200. To register, please visit www.igala8.com
