Hydro One proudly supports Earth Hour

TORONTO, March 26 /CNW/ - Hydro One is proud to support Earth Hour for the third consecutive year and is encouraging its customers and employees to turn off all non-essential lighting on Saturday, March 27, 2010 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Earth Hour is a global World Wildlife Federation (WWF) initiative. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities are invited to turn out their lights for one hour on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. to show their support for action on climate change. The event began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and has since grown into a global movement reaching more than one billion people.

"Hydro One is proud to participate in this important initiative because it calls attention to what can be done to combat climate change while at the same time, reminds us of the value of electricity in our everyday lives," said Giuliana Rossini, Director, Strategy and Conservation Officer, Hydro One. "Hydro One will take steps to turn off non-essential electrical equipment at our facilities across the province but will keep on certain lights at our field locations for the safety of the public and our workers."

Hydro One encourages its employees to participate in Earth Hour as it supports the Company's objectives under its Greener Choices Program. The Greener Choices Program is a series of environmental initiatives aimed at reducing the Company's environmental footprint.

In addition to the Company's efforts, Hydro One customers across the province have also been taking part in conservation and demand management programs resulting in savings of more than 450 million kilowatt hours annually - enough electricity to power approximately 38,000 homes for a year.

Hydro One delivers electricity safely, reliably and responsibly to homes and businesses across the province of Ontario and owns and operates Ontario's 29,000 km high-voltage transmission network that delivers electricity to large industrial customers and municipal utilities, and a 123,000 km low-voltage distribution system that serves about 1.3 million end-use customers and smaller municipal utilities in the province. Hydro One is wholly owned by the Province of Ontario.
