SAN FRANCISCO, April 14 /CNW/ -- Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the April 2010 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that will maximize their travel dollars. Windsor and Cambridge jump back onto the list this month with significant price drops, 31 percent and 21 percent respectively, knocking three-month leader Calgary down to the fifth spot.

Scenic border cities Windsor and Cambridge rely heavily on U.S.-based tourism, and both are offering amazing deals this month due to several factors. Recent passport legislation between the U.S. and Canada has affected leisure travel from the U.S. as it can be very costly for a family to renew or obtain the passports needed to cross the border. This situation, coupled with the fact that the Canadian dollar is currently valued equally with the U.S. dollar is causing hotels to drop prices in order to make a vacation to Canada more cost effective.

Edmonton and Calgary are also dropping prices, and we expect that trend to continue. Last spring these cities maintained hotel rates due to the relative strength of their business traffic, but even their demand has weakened this year. Spring skiers in particular should look for a quick getaway and incredible deals in Calgary.

Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory, which means that customers will find deals that they won't see anywhere else, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.

When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for April 2010 include:

"These locations are great travel destinations year-round, but domestically, now is a great time to plan leisure trips or business meetings to these cities," said Clem Bason, President of the Hotwire Group. "We expect that these exceptional rates will continue to be available in these locales throughout the spring."

About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report

The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.
