HAMILTON, ON, Nov. 29, 2016 /CNW/ - The Around the Bay Road Race will celebrate its 123rd Anniversary in 2017 by welcoming the return of Valley Inn Road and the addition of CN as Presenting Sponsor. In 2015 and 2016, the Around the Bay 30k route had to be redesigned to omit Valley Inn Road as the result of construction that will enhance GO Transit rail service in Hamilton. CN is building a second mainline track as part of this initiative.
"We know that Valley Inn Road is an important thoroughfare in this community, and an integral part of the famous Around the Bay Road Race," said Drew Redden, CN's Community Affairs Lead for Ontario. "The construction has been a major undertaking, and we're immensely grateful to the people of Hamilton for their patience. Now it's time to celebrate the re-opening and a new partnership."
Redden and Race Director Anna Lewis trekked the "hill" recently while admiring the great view of the Hamilton Harbour and the refreshed landscape around Valley Inn Road. "We are thrilled to have this feature element of the race return to the 30k route. Runners love to hate the hill because it is so challenging but at the same time gives a great sense of accomplishment when conquered. It's exciting to have CN as the Presenting Sponsor and supporting this historic Hamilton event," said Lewis.
Since 1894, the Bay Race has been a world-class running event and a proud Hamilton tradition. The Around the Bay Road Race will take place on Sunday, March 26, 2017 with the 30k starting at 9:30 a.m. and the 5k following shortly after at 9:45 a.m. Over 11,000 participants are expected and the two-person relays are already sold out.
