Harper Government Supports the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

VICTORIAVILLE et DRUMMONDVILLE, QC, Dec. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament (Mégantic-L'Érable), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Hockey Canada in support of the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

"Our Government is a proud supporter of the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, and we are excited to see approximately 110 youth from across the country represent both their region and Canada," said Minister of State Gosal. "These young hockey players are shining examples of how investing in our athletes at an early age supports our playground-to-podium initiatives."

"On behalf of our Government, I am pleased to welcome athletes and coaches from coast to coast and from around the world to la belle province," said Minister Paradis. "Hosting international sport events gives Canada the opportunity to showcase our country to athletes and spectators from all over the world, and brings significant economic benefits to Canadians and their communities."

The 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge is taking place from December 29, 2012, to January 4, 2013, in Victoriaville and Drummondville, Quebec. The tournament features teams from Canada (Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, Western Canada, and Pacific Canada), Germany, Sweden, Russia, Finland, Slovakia, and the United States of America.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Hockey Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program.
