Government of Canada invests in Trail Regional Airport upgrade
OTTAWA, Aug. 19 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport), together with Marguerite Rotvold, board chair of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) Airport, announced today that the Government of Canada is making an important safety investment in the Trail Regional Airport.
"Regional airports are vital to rural communities across the country, which is why the Government of Canada is taking action to invest in these improvements," said Minister Merrifield. "This funding will allow the Trail Airport to make this important safety upgrade, and maintain excellent service to passengers and businesses throughout the community."
"It is important for our community to have the necessary safety equipment to maintain the Trail Regional Airport as a significant transportation link to the West Kootenays," said Ms. Rotvold. "This federal funding helps us improve operational safety at the airport and we greatly appreciate the recognition from the Government of Canada that our airport is important to them as well as to our citizens."
The Government of Canada is investing $215,704 to replace the existing runway sweeper. This represents the first time the Trail Regional Airport has applied for and received federal funding under the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).
This year, the Government of Canada will invest more than $42 million in safety-related improvements at airports across Canada. These improvements will be funded in 2010-2011 under ACAP.
