MONTREAL, Feb. 1 /CNW Telbec/ - A study looking at the 44,881 authors who published articles in 20 core production and operations management (POM) journals in the past half century has ranked a Quebec researcher first in the world.
Gilbert Laporte, a Professor with the Department of Management Sciences at HEC Montréal, placed first for his productivity in the select group of five leading journals in this field, for his scientific output, and for his total number of publications (161 articles) in all the 20 journals analyzed over the period covered by the study (1959-2008).
Professor Laporte's exceptional scientific contribution in the field of production and operations management, already recognized by numerous awards and distinctions, was clearly highlighted in this recent study. He is one of the two authors with the greatest number of collaborations with the most authors over the past 20 years, a clear indication of his talent in forging fruitful research partnerships with experts around the globe.
"We are particularly pleased to have such an eminent researcher as Gilbert Laporte as one of our professors," noted Director Michel Patry. "His research helps to advance knowledge in his chosen field, and to enhance our School's standing worldwide."
The study, by Taiwanese authors Pao-Nuan Hsieh and Pao-Long Chang, entitled "An assessment of world-wide research productivity in production and operations management," appeared in the August issue of the International Journal of Production Economics.
Over the past year, Professor Laporte has received a large number of tributes. He won the 2009 Gérard-Parizeau Award and was also honoured with the Robert M. Herman Lifetime Achievement Award in Transportation Science, from the Transportation Science and Logistics Society of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). It was presented to him in October last year at the annual INFORMS meeting, in San Diego. He was also named the 42nd honorary member of the Omega Rho International Honor Society of INFORMS, at the CORS-INFORMS meeting in Toronto in June 2009.
Gilbert Laporte is a Full Professor of Operational Research at HEC Montréal, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Distribution Management, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since 1998 and a Fellow of INFORMS since 2005, to mention only a few distinctions. In 2007, the Royal Society of Canada awarded him the Innis-Gérin Medal.
