TORONTO, Oct. 23 /CNW/ - Food Banks Canada and Boisset, La Famille des Grands Vins (FGV), have entered into a partnership to help reduce hunger in Canada. Until November 7, 2009, 50 cents from the sale of every French rabbit, Green rabbit and DeLoach wine at the LCBO will be donated to Food Banks Canada. The goal is to raise money for 100,000 meals for Canada's hungry during the campaign period.
"We are committed to helping families in need in this trying time for Canada and the world. Never before has it been so important," explains Jean-Charles Boisset, President of Boisset Family Estates. He believes strongly that, with the integral connection between wine and food, it is essential for his family's company to contribute to a solution.
The LCBO is strongly supporting the program with displays of the French rabbit, Green rabbit and DeLoach wines during the donation period. In addition, selected stores will have food collection bins from local food banks so that consumers can contribute in that way if they wish.
"We applaud this initiative by Boisset FGV to support Food Banks Canada, at a time when so many are in need," says LCBO President and CEO Bob Peter. "LCBO customers and staff have always responded generously to worthy causes and this fundraising effort gives them another opportunity to contribute dirctly and make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families in their communities."
The statistics are alarming: One in 11 Canadians struggle with hunger each year, that's 2.7 million Canadians or 8.8 per cent of the population.* More than 700,000 individuals access a food bank every month in Canada: 37 per cent of which are children; 50 per cent of clients are families with children. * In Ontario, over 300,000 individuals access a food bank every month. This initiative will support Food Banks Canada and its Affiliate Member food banks across Ontario. "Food Banks Canada is very pleased to be working with Boisset FGV to support hungry Canadians" said Katharine Schmidt, Executive Director. "Through the purchase of a bottle of select wine from Boisset FGV, Ontarians are able to support those in need in their community and make a difference".
