Emerging visual artists wanted to participate in RBC Canadian Painting Competition

Next generation of Canadian painters are invited to submit work for 17th annual competition

TORONTO, Feb. 11, 2015 /CNW/ - Today, RBC and the Canadian Art Foundation opened the call for submissions to the 2015 RBC Canadian Painting Competition.

As part of the RBC Emerging Artists Project, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition seeks to give exposure and opportunity to Canada's next generation of visual artists, in addition to a total of $85,000 in prize money to the finalists. A fixture on Canada's art circuit, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition has given a platform for exposure and mentorship to emerging artists. Past finalists include Dil Hildebrand, Sasha Pierce, Kristine Moran and Rebecca Brewer.

"The competition provides invaluable assistance to the 15 finalists who are emerging on the national stage and who benefit from the support, exposure and mentorship the competition offers them," said Robin Anthony, Art Curator, RBC. "This is a rare opportunity to become part of an esteemed list of alumni and many of the finalists have received the exposure that has led to a successful career in visual art."

Entries are now being accepted online at www.rbc.com/paintingcompetition and must be received by May 6, 2015 at 4 p.m. EST. The submitted works will be short-listed to 15 finalists by an independent panel of judges, made up of experts from Canada's art community. Finalists will be announced on June 24, 2015, and all 15 artists will have their work exhibited at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver in November, 2015.

The jury of nine art experts will meet in November to determine one winner and two honourable mentions, who will be announced on November 18, 2015 in Vancouver. The RBC Painting Competition offers $85,000 in prize money to the finalists. The winner will receive a prize of $25,000, the two honourable mentions will receive $15,000 each and the remaining 12 finalists receive $2,500 each.

The paintings by the winner and two honourable mentions will be added to RBC's Art Collection along with the winners of the previous 16 competitions.  RBC's Art Collection features more than 4,000 works collected since 1929, including original works of art by historical and emerging Canadian artists.

Established in 1999, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition's goal is to invest in and nurture Canada's next generation of visual artists, to provide a forum to display artistic talent to the country and to open doors to success.
