Dubai Team sweeps medals in Vancouver Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition

Shaika Al Tayer and Amina Al Tayer are breaking new ground in UAE women's sports.

VANCOUVER, March 31, 2015 /CNW/ - For the first time, the Dubai Rhythmic Gymnastics Team (DuGym) has won multiple Gold and Silver medals in international competition, at the Planet Rhythmic Invitational in Vancouver. Two UAE Nationals, Shaikha Saeed Al Tayer and Amina Saeed Al Tayer, are the leading competitors.

Shaikha Al Tayer, aged 10, won three Gold Medals for her freehand, hoop and ball routines and won Gold Medal overall.   Inka Viita, aged 14, won four Gold Medals for her freehand, hoop and ball routines, and overall.  Amina Al Tayer, 13, won four Silver Medals for her freehand, hoop and ball routines and Silver overall. The total tally for all DuGym team members was; 14 Gold, 6 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Shaikha and Amina Al Tayer are the first UAE Nationals to compete internationally in Rhythmic Gymnastics. Their next competition is April 2, 2015 at the Verbania International Altair Rhythmic Cup in Italy.

Shaikha recently participated in The International Mikulas Cup in Budapest, Hungary in December 2014 and took the Silver Medal.  It's her dream to compete one day in the Olympic Games representing the UAE.

Amina previously won Gold for her hoop routine at the Spring Fling in Columbus, Ohio in March 2014. Her goal is to become a Rhythmic Gymnastics coach, and to help other UAE women compete internationally.

Rhythmic Gymnastics combines the grace of ballet with the athleticism of gymnastics.  Athletes engage in intense strength and ballet training. Various apparatus such as hoop, ball, rope, ribbon, and clubs can be used in the routines that are set to music.
