TORONTO, Dec. 12, 2016 /CNW/ - If you're a CEO trying to figure out how to attract the best and brightest to your organization, there's a remarkable lesson to be found in the 11th annual list of Greater Toronto's Top Employers, which was released this morning by the editors of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project.
"It's not hard to see the connection between inclusion and the employers that are succeeding in Greater Toronto's highly competitive marketplace," says Richard Yerema, Managing Editor at Mediacorp Canada Inc., which manages the project. "The GTA is a magnet for the best and brightest people not just from across Canada, but all over the world. If your organization isn't making all employees feel welcome and valued in your workplace, you simply won't attract the best staff."
This year saw a record number of employers apply to the national competition. Mediacorp editors started by examining the recruitment histories of over 90,000 employers that it tracks for its popular job-search engine, Eluta.ca. From this pool, Mediacorp invited approximately 7,500 employers to submit detailed applications, including a comprehensive review of their operations and HR practices that compares them to others in their industry and region.
"Some years ago, we recognized that employers that take a broader view of their role in the community were almost always better places to work," says Kristina Leung, Senior Editor at Mediacorp. "Today, we see the same with inclusion: employers that understand the need to make employees from diverse backgrounds feel welcome and valued in their workplace almost always end up with the best talent. In Canada, competition for the best employees is strongest in the GTA, so it's no surprise that we see many of the nation's most innovative and progressive employers here."
Employers throughout the GTA were evaluated by the editors at Canada's Top 100 Employers using the same criteria as the national competition: (1) Physical Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. The competition is open to any employer with its head office in the GTA; employers of any size may apply, whether in the private or public sector.
Founded in 1992, Mediacorp Canada Inc. is the nation's largest publisher of employment periodicals. Since 1999, the Toronto-based publisher has managed the Canada's Top 100 Employers project, which includes 19 regional and special-interest editorial competitions that reach over 13 million Canadians annually through a variety of magazine and newspaper partners, including The Globe and Mail.
