MONTREAL, April 27 /CNW Telbec/ - On Friday May 7th, 2010, Défi Canderel will be hosting its 21st edition of the annual Cancer Research fundraiser. Each year, more than 50 corporate teams gather for a fun-filled walk or run through Montreal's downtown core.
"The Défi Canderel is one of the few corporate charitable events that specifically funds Cancer Research right here in Montreal," says Sylvia Reiter, Assistant Vice-President and Associate General Counsel at Great-West Life. "Our employees take pride in participating in the event each year; it's a great opportunity to help build strong team spirit."
Great-West Life and its subsidiaries, London Life and Canada Life, have contributed more than $145,000 to the Défi since 1998 through the companies' national corporate citizenship program and the dedication of a corporate team.
For Sylvia, as for many others who participate on corporate teams, the cause is personal.
"My husband was diagnosed 10 years ago with 50 per cent chance of survival. He is now cured from cancer thanks to the excellent treatment he received right here in Montreal."
After more than 20 years, the fundraiser continues to be a success, with many companies coming on board every year for the first time. The Défi also has a strong group of organizations returning year after year from the legal community, real estate and construction industries, and many more.
Défi Canderel unites employees across all levels and different sectors within the organizations. It is common to see top executives team up with front-line staff to take part in the fun. To register for the Défi, companies must raise or donate a minimum of $2,000 per team of five or more runners. All funds raised by the event go directly to support Cancer Research at the Goodman Cancer Centre at McGill University and l'Institut du cancer de Montréal at l'Université de Montréal.
About Défi Canderel
Since 1989, Canderel has been organizing one of Montreal's biggest fund-raisers. In that time, close to $6 million has been raised for cancer research at the Goodman Cancer Centre at McGill University and the Institut du cancer de Montréal at l'Université de Montréal. This money has yielded tangible, measurable results. Specialized equipment, research grants and much more has been made possible, and the universities involved take pride each year in revealing what the money raised was used for.
Note to Media:
In the weeks leading up to the event, interviews may be scheduled with Défi Canderel Chairman Jonathan Wener and his wife Susan, as well as representatives from participating companies such as Great-West Life, Goodman Cancer Centre and the Institut du cancer de Montréal.
