CMI urges government to reconsider new temporary foreign worker regulations

TORONTO, Dec. 9 /CNW/ - The Canadian Migration Institute (CMI) is calling on the Federal government to revisit new regulations being proposed that will impede the availability of temporary foreign workers (TFWs) to businesses in key industries, which could hamper Canada's economic recovery.

"Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has publicly acknowledged the important role TFWs play in Canada's economy," said Imran Qayyum, Chair of CMI. "But the new rules add unnecessary obstacles to the hiring and retention of TFWs. And when employers can't get the workers they need it hits their bottom line."

Under the proposed new process the commitment of time and resources necessary to employ a TFW will increase drastically while placing an unnecessary burden on the Foreign Workers to research whether their employer is blacklisted by the government before entering into a contract with the employer.

In a submission made to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, CMI outlined its concerns and suggested amendments to the government's proposed changes to Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations regarding TFW. A copy of the complete submission is available at www.cmi-icm.ca.

"There is no doubt that the new requirements will discourage employers from employing TFWs," said Qayyum. "That could lead to a labour shortage in some sectors, which would have a negative impact on Canada's economic recovery. We encourage the Government to give this another look."

The role of the Canadian Migration Institute (www.cmi-icm.ca) is to educate, advocate and accredit on immigration policy. CMI represents more than 1500 authorized immigration representatives and is the largest organization of its kind in North America. CMI has several chapters throughout Canada that provide regional support through accredited educational programs, advocacy on provincial issues and a local network for interaction and connection amongst authorized representatives.
