HAMILTON, ON, Oct. 20 /CNW/ - Cleanfield Alternative Energy Inc. (TSX Venture: AIR), the parent company of Cleanfield Energy Corp ("Cleanfield"), an international leader in Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) solutions, announced today that it is developing a solar photovoltaic (PV) technology inverter. Cleanfield's CEO Tony Verrelli said, "We expect the Ontario Power Authority's new renewable energy feed-in tariff program to significantly accelerate the production and installation of solar PV systems in the Ontario market. Our proprietary wind inverter is well tested, certified and proven for commercial applications, so we are now modifying it to accommodate the requirements of solar panels and collaborating with solar technology specialists in product manufacturing."
Ontario's Feed-in Tariff (FIT) Program: Ontario's renewable energy FIT program is North America's first comprehensive guaranteed pricing structure for electricity production under long-term contracts from renewable energy sources, including wind and solar PV power. On October 1, 2009, the OPA launched a FIT program for projects over 10 kW of installed power capacity, and a microFIT program for projects under 10 kW.
Cleanfield's Solar System Inverter (SSI): Cleanfield has successfully developed a wind power inverter in accordance with international standards in terms of power quality, safety and environmental factors. An inverter converts energy generated by wind turbine or solar panel to AC electricity. Cleanfield is expanding the use of its innovative inverter to solar PV and wind/solar hybrid applications with the SSI, with features including: high efficiency, PV maximum power tracking, parallel operation capability single/3-phase operation (grid interactive), and auxiliary control. Cleanfield hopes to launch the SSI in the second half of next year. The company will mainly target sales to residential and commercial customers, for applications below 10 kW of capacity (eligible for the microFIT Program). The parallel operation capability of the SSI will also allow applications above 10 kW (eligible for the FIT program).
Cleanfield and Supan Technologies are collaborating on the development and demonstration of hybrid PV-VAWT systems in Ontario. Supan Technologies conducts PV research and offers PV manufacturing solutions and advisory services. According to Supan's Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Advisor Dr. Raye Thomas, "There is a lack of PV modules and inverters particularly for solar installations under 10 kW manufactured in Ontario, making it difficult to meet the Ontario content requirements for PV systems installed under the microFIT program. Cleanfield's SSI will be designed and manufactured in Ontario, thereby meeting OPA's requirements."
