OTTAWA, Canada, Oct. 13, 2015 /CNW/ -- CENGN, Canada's Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (NGN), a leader in the rapid commercialization of NGN products, applications and services, together with Canadian NGN leaders, today announced that it will unveil and provide live demonstrations of ground-breaking commercialization projects at the SDN and OpenFlow World Congress from October 12 to 16, 2015 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Assembling more than 1,300 global delegates, this international conference creates a unique forum for CENGN-supported small and medium-sized enterprises and their multinational partners to showcase, validate and market emerging Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) innovations to prospective clients around the world. The resulting opportunities promise to catalyze the commercialization of these NGN solutions, and help participating firms capture a greater share of the global SDN and NFV market, which is expected to exceed $40 billion by 2018.
Leveraging support from the Governments of Canada and Ontario, CENGN and eight member companies will participate in the conference's SDN Showcase. Participating leaders will conduct live demonstrations of new SDN and NFV capabilities emerging from the following five CENGN-supported commercialization projects – which include two finalists for the Best-in-Show Award in the ONF SDN Solutions Showcase and Competition:
- ONF SDN Solutions Showcase Finalist: Multi-Site Multi-Domain Data Center Capacity Management – BTI Systems and Corsa Technologies
- ONF SDN Solutions Showcase Finalist: NFV-Based LTE Core in the Cloud – CENGN and Expeto
- Multi-Layer Data Connectivity Orchestration: CENX and Telus
- OpenFlow Switch - Hybrid MPLS VPN: Noviflow and Telus
- Open Smart City Infrastructure and Services: Juniper and Inocybe
"Conference delegates will have the opportunity to see real live demonstrations showcasing the value of these Canadian SDN and NFV innovations that are relevant for Service Providers and their commercial offerings," said Ritch Dusome, President and CEO of CENGN. "Once commercialized, these solutions will help Service Providers to create more flexible, agile and cost-effective solutions for their customers."

These solutions will benefit network operators, their customers, and Canadians more broadly. For example, they will enable:
- Data centres to put 'green' or more environmentally sound technologies to work within their operations; better assess their energy usage; and capitalize on renewable energy sources to power the network
- Companies to leverage 'pay-as-you-go' models of Internet usage, enabling them to scale-up or reduce their bandwidth as required, and strictly pay for what they use; and
- Individual network users such as physicians to access bandwidth 'on-demand' in their practice, and perform remote surgeries on patients at a distance seamlessly.
In addition to project demonstrations, CENGN will promote Canada's unique SDN and NFV expertise throughout the conference to help stimulate additional R&D and business opportunities for CENGN member companies. CENGN CEO Ritch Dusome will deliver two presentations on the SDN and Openflow World Congress stage on: CENGN Project Use Cases and Expertise with Arno; SDN and NFV Real World Deployments. The organization will also facilitate Business-to-Business (B2B) meetings along with participating Canadian and international firms, and facilitate interviews with international media. Together, these targeted actions at the SDN and OpenFlow World Congress promise to increase the global competitiveness of CENGN-supported companies.

 Software Defined Networking (SDN) solutions shift network management capabilities from carbon-emitting hardware (such as racks of servers) to a software-based application. SDN technologies reduce the need for such hardware, and maximize the usage of all network resources.
 Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) refers to the creation of a virtual (rather than a physical) version of something, such as an operating system, server, data storage device or network. It enables multiple computing resources to be accessed from a single server, resulting in fewer servers, less energy consumption and maintenance.
