Canadian Takes Off in NYC with Celebrity American Artist

VANCOUVER, Feb. 5, 2015 /CNW/ - A "runway" exhibition in New York of works from an American graffiti artist, the internationally collected and commissioned Retna, will launch with a Canadian "wingman."

A new gallery, the Hoerle-Guggenheim, will open Deconstructive/Constructive from Jason Dussault on March 3. Some of Mr. Dussault's works – they are massive mosaics -- are already on display in the gallery.

The gallery will open its Retna exhibition on Feb. 12, first day of the annual NYC Fashion Week.

The Hoerle-Guggenheim (hoerle-guggenheim.com) is aggressively pursuing the international art-buyer with a precious, and precocious, constellation of pop and street and graffiti artists. Retna is probably the gallery's brightest star.

A native of Los Angeles, the 35-year-old Marquis Lewis has turned his youthful graffiti experiences into pieces exhibited in galleries in his hometown and Miami, London, New York and Hong Kong. VistaJet, Louis Vuitton and Nike have commissioned work by him.

Jason Dussault is already turning heads in New York because his mosaics are mass-media animated, as are so many creations by street artists, and because they are masterfully executed, Philippe Hoerle-Guggenheim says.

"Jason's work shows figures we can all relate to. It is generational and we all grew up reading and seeing heroes in action. It resonates."

About Mr. Dussault's command of his medium, M. Hoerle-Guggenheim comments: "I like to focus on artists that have a tremendous skill set," the gallery owner explains.

" 'Breaking' the mosaic the way he does takes not only skill, but a great amount of patience, and I just knew that he wants to be successful as an artist bad enough to go through the whole process."

Street and pop art are eagerly collected today. At $653.2 million US in transactions in 2014, Andy Warhol was the top-selling auction-house artist last year, Bloomberg recently reported. At $172.2 million, Jean-Michel Basquiat was 10th.
