Canadian globetrotter and BBC chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet to host CJF Awards

TORONTO, April 10, 2017 /CNW/ - Lyse Doucet, BBC's chief international correspondent and senior presenter for BBC World TV and BBC World Service Radio, will host this year's CJF Awards on June 8 at The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.

"At a time when the very essence of journalism is under attack, we must redouble our commitment to what we do and how we contribute to a more informed and inspired understanding of Canada and the world beyond," says Doucet, who was born and raised in New Brunswick before carving a career abroad. "It's a great honour for me to come home to join colleagues and friends at this year's CJF awards to celebrate the best of storytelling."

The annual gala hosted by The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) is a celebration of journalistic excellence. It is attended by more than 600 of the country's business and media luminaries to honour those who have made significant contributions to journalism and to recognize emerging talent.

Doucet spent 15 years as a BBC foreign correspondent with postings in Jerusalem, Amman, Islamabad, Tehran, Kabul and Abidjan. She was awarded an OBE in 2014 for her services to broadcasting and the Columbia Journalism Award for lifetime achievement in 2016.

Doucet, a Queen's University graduate, has a Master's degree in International Relations from the University of Toronto and holds honorary doctorates from several leading British and Canadian universities. She is an honorary patron of Canadian Crossroads International and a member of Friends of Aschiana UK, which supports working street children in Afghanistan. She is also a founding member of the Marie Colvin Journalists' Network, a Senior Fellow of Massey College at the University of Toronto and a member of the Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma.

Awards to be presented at the event include: the CJF Tribute, the CJF Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism (awarded in two categories—large and small media), the Lifetime Achievement Award, the CJF Innovation Award, The Landsberg Award, the CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowships, the Greg Clark Award, the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award, the William Southam Journalism Fellowships, the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy and the Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University.
