Canadian Club of Toronto Expands Access for Persons with Disabilities
TORONTO, Sept. 24 /CNW/ - The Canadian Club of Toronto is now offering enhanced services to enable maximum participation in Canadian Club events by persons with disabilities. On June 30, 2010, the Board of the Club passed a new Accessibility Policy for the 2010-11 Season and beyond. Under the policy:
- Members of the public with hearing disabilities will be provided sign language interpretation at club events on request.
- Members of the public with visual disabilities will be offered enhanced volunteer support at events, and Braille editions of the Club program on request.
- The Club will continue to encourage management of the venues where events are held to ensure the greatest degree of physical accessibility possible.
"The Canadian Club is an open, accessible service organization," said Club President Nick Chambers. "We want to engage as many citizens as possible in our program. That means going beyond the letter of the law and doing everything we can to make participation in Club events easy and accessible for persons with disabilities."
The new Accessibility Policy completes a year-long process at the Club. Taking its cue from the province of Ontario's policy development guidelines, the Club initiated a review of the accessibility of Club events, consulted with groups representing disabled persons, identified barriers to access, developed and costed strategies for remediation, and has implemented the policy, including a mechanism for future upgrades as required.
"We're proud to have shown leadership on this issue," said Chambers. "Citizen engagement means accessibility for citizens with disabilities. Our accessibility policy is now among the strongest of any service organization in Toronto, and we'd invite other comparable organizations to consider adopting similar measures. "
