Canada and United States Unveil Next Phase of the Clean Energy Dialogue

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 21, 2012 /CNW/ - The Governments of Canada and the United States released the United States-Canada Clean Energy Dialogue Action Plan II today, which outlines the next phase of activities the two countries will jointly undertake to advance clean energy technologies.

"The Clean Energy Dialogue strengthens our efforts to collaborate on innovative clean energy solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment, from Rio de Janeiro where he is leading the Canadian delegation at the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. "It is our hope that the transformation of our economies and our joint work will identify clean energy solutions that will contribute to making sustainable energy a reality for all."

Through the Clean Energy Dialogue Action Plan II, the United States and Canada will continue to advance the work on carbon capture and storage, integrating the electricity grid and clean energy research and development. In addition, a greater emphasis will be placed on collaboration and sharing best practices to improve energy efficiency.

"We are working together with the United States through the Clean Energy Dialogue to advance clean technologies and increase energy security," said the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, speaking from Ottawa. "These activities are an important part of our government's focused plan to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for all Canadians."

Since the launch of the United States-Canada Clean Energy Dialogue by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and President Barack Obama in 2009, progress has been made in building cross-border clean energy networks and strengthening collaboration between the two countries.
