TORONTO, Oct. 21 /CNW Telbec/ - Birks, Canada's leading jeweller, today announced that it has donated $95,000 to Plan Canada, Olympic medalist and BIRKS Brand Ambassador Jenn Heil's charity of choice. The amount was raised at an event held in Birks' Montreal store last September 30th in the presence of 350 guests from the business, fashion and entertainment community. The funds will help accelerate girls' education in Burkina Faso, where approximately 80 girls will have access to scholarships and school supplies as a direct result of Birks' donation to Plan Canada.
Birks President and CEO Tom Andruskevich presented the cheque to Plan Canada at their Toronto office earlier this week. "We are proud to be supporting Plan Canada, Jenn Heil's charity of choice. I wish to thank all of our sponsors and guests who helped us raise this amount to benefit the Because I am a Girl campaign," he stated.
"The Plan Canada team is very grateful to Birks for its leadership in supporting the Because I am a Girl campaign," said Paula Roberts, Plan Canada's Executive Vice President, Marketing & Development. "Their generosity will help us to continue improving the lives of young girls by empowering them to claim a brighter future with access to the resources necessary to their education and development," she concluded.
In addition to the $95,000 raised, Birks will be donating a portion of sales of Jenn Heil's new Dream pendant, an item she designed in collaboration with the jeweller especially for the Because I am a Girl campaign. The pendant is sold in Birks stores across Canada as well as on www.birks.com and www.birksusa.com.
