To prepare for the Spartan Race, the Downtown Montreal and West Island Y centres will host complimentary Spartan Boot Camps for members and people over age 16 who register for Spartan Race.

"Mental and physical challenges on our courses will give people something different to do - and think about," said Spartan Race Director Brian Duncanson. "It's a metaphor for life; you never know what's around the corner. You just have to deal with the challenge presented to you and move on."

From the thousands of competitors who engage in the Spartan Race Series, Duncanson said one percent are expected to make the cut to become eligible to compete in the annual Death Race held in Pittsfield.

Who does Duncanson see as Spartan Race competitors?

"Everyone, really. The Spartan Races are designed for participants to have fun and cross the finish line. You need a little physical conditioning and a taste for some adventure," said Duncanson.

The finish line/expo arena will be designed for a hero's welcome with a post-event feast along with such medieval events as spear throwing and fire breathing.

"This is not an extreme sporting event that will scare people away. It's about the fun, getting dirty, getting down in the mud, something exciting and new," said Duncanson.

The festive event welcomes the public who come to support their favorite Spartans.

People may register online as a solo participant or in teams of 4 at www.spartanrace.com.
