TORONTO, Feb. 3, 2016 /CNW/ - Bayer Inc. and ASPIRIN® 81mg want Canadians to have The Talk with their parents to help them better understand the increase in health risks they face as they get older. With February marking Heart Month, it is extremely important that we have a conversation with them about the ways their risk of a heart attack can change as they age. In fact, one heart attack occurs every 7 minutes in Canada.ii  It is of paramount importance that our loved ones recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and what they can do to make a difference: in the event of a heart attack, call 911 and crush or chew two ASPIRIN® 81mg and it may save your life.

A new survey conducted by Vision Critical found that 74 per cent of Canadians aged 18-54 agree that their concern for the health of their parents and/or loved ones increase as they age.iii Further, the survey also revealed that 34 per cent of this demographic find it difficult to discuss their parent(s) and/or loved one's health and well-being with them.iv

"It's not easy to have a serious talk with our parents about their health, often they are unreceptive or it's uncomfortable, but I learned the hard way that it needs to be a priority," says Kaylyn Kyle, Canadian professional athlete and spokesperson on behalf of Bayer. "My father experienced some health issues recently and it was definitely a wake-up call. When it comes to the health of the ones we love, we can never be too prepared. Setting up the conversation in a comfortable setting, doing something you love can really help. For me, it's just kicking around the soccer ball with my dad."

Surprisingly, Canadians are not all that familiar with the signs of a heart attack – 75 per cent of survey respondents feel that they know the signs, but only 10 per cent of those were able to correctly identify the symptoms, when asked. Common signs include: chest discomfort, upper body discomfort (including discomfort in the arms, jaw, neck and back), shortness of breath, sweating and nausea, and light-headedness.

A reminder to be proactive when it comes to heart attacks is a great way to show the ones we love that we care: carrying ASPIRIN® 81mg is a simple step that ensures they are prepared in the unexpected but all-too-common event of a heart attack, giving both you and your loved ones peace of mind.

It is no secret that parents tend to worry about their children's well-being more than their own, which can make The Talk a tough one to lead. About the survey
From January 4 to January 5, 2016 an online survey was conducted among 666 randomly selected Canadian adults ages 25-50 and 478 adults ages 51-65 who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The margin of error—which measures sampling variability—is +/- 3.8%, 19 times out of 20 for the 25-50 sample and +/- 4.5%, 19 times out of 20 for the 51-65 sample. The results have been statistically weighted according to education, age, gender and region (and in Quebec, language) Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada.
