TORONTO, Dec. 9 /CNW/ - The renowned AMISH FURNITURE OUTLET, Ontario, Canada has filed for bankruptcy under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. This ends an over ten year era of retailing exceptional crafted furniture in Southern Ontario.
This dedication of quality and craftsmanship began in Europe in the mid-17th century by Jacob Amman (1644-1720) for whom the name "Amish" is derived. By the early 18th Century, the Amish migrated to the U.S. and Southern Ontario. In fact, by 1850, there were about 1,000 Amish people living in Ontario. They were immediately recognized for the superior quality and detailing of their woodwork that they had brought to their "new country". This included a rich array of fine furnishings and décor - everything from simple jelly cupboards to authentic eye-catching Mission dining and bedroom suites. Everything was meticulously 100% crafted by the Amish tradespeople using only solid wood - never veneers or laminates. Their reputation was built and sustained in this way.
In 1997, led by Craig Stewart and his father, the store Oak Country Canada, that honoured and recreated this tradition of excellence, opened for Ontarians and beyond. By 2004, a second store was created using the name Amish Furniture Outlet Ltd. A Mississauga store followed in 2005, as did one in Burlington in 2006.
These stores immediately became renowned for the highest quality - constructed solid oak, cherry, maple and hickory wood furniture "built to last a lifetime". This included furniture and handmade accessories for the dining room; living and bedroom; kitchen tables and islands; entertainment units; office and boardroom furniture; plus splendid accents and gifts. Custom furniture, designed and sized to a customer's specifications was also available. Over 100 Amish families in Ohio were engaged and specialized in crafting furniture - each mastering 'key' components such as drawer boxes, doors, frames, etc. - all working together to a detailed finish of each piece.
