Alberta pet food maker wins coveted global Pet Food of the Year award for
2010-2011

ORIJEN judged healthiest pet food by Washington research institute

MORINVILLE, AB, May 3 /CNW/ - Once again Champion Petfoods LP has emerged as the healthiest dog and cat pet food on the market, as judged by the Glycemic Research Institute(R) in Washington, D.C. It is the second year in a row that this Morinville, Alberta pet food company has received this coveted Pet Food of the Year award for its ORIJEN brand.

The Glycemic Research Institute(R), a non-profit research organization with no ties to the pet food industry, conducts independent clinical and analytical research on pet foods and pet treats. GRI has examined hundreds of pet foods since 2004 to determine the healthiest overall products, focusing on anti-aging, diabetes, arthritis, glycemic, and blood glucose and insulin response in dogs and cats.

"We are elated to receive this prestigious award for the second year in a row," said Champion Petfoods Marketing Manager, Peter Muhlenfeld. "Our production focus continues on producing innovative pet food from fresh ingredients raised or fished in our region by people we know and trust," added Muhlenfeld.

Champion's ORIJEN product line is based on its award-winning formula for success. ORIJEN is a biologically appropriate pet food produced from fresh regional ingredients, including wild-caught fish, free-run poultry and free-range lamb, boar, bison and beef. The company has been producing quality pet foods for over 25 years and now distributes its product line world-wide to 50 countries. Their products are never outsourced and are always produced in their own factory in Morinville, Alberta, located 25 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

"The Pet Food of the Year Award is a global award presented by the Glycemic Research Institute(R) for best overall healthiest pet food," said Don Chlysta, Clinical Studies Coordinator for GRI. "The strict award criterion involves in-depth analysis of the product and its suitability for pets," added Chlysta.

BACKGROUNDER

CHAMPION PETFOODS LP

Champion Petfoods LP, unlike other marketing companies and multinationals that sell, but don't actually make today's pet foods, is an independent Canadian pet food maker with a 25 year tradition of quality, and a mission that is simple and clear. Champion produces biologically appropriate pet foods from fresh regional ingredients, produced exclusively in their award-winning facility in Alberta (Morinville), Canada. Its ORIJEN and ACANA brands are never made or packaged in a factory other than Champion's.

Champion's production focus is on fresh ingredients grown, raised or fished within its region, by people they know and trust and delivered fresh to their factory each day.

ORIJEN REPRESENTS A NEW CLASS OF PET FOOD

The biologically appropriate concept is simple: include fresh whole foods that nature evolved dogs and cats like to eat (in correct ratio and quantity) and exclude ingredients like high carbohydrate cereal grains and vegetable oils that do not belong in the natural diet.

High-protein, low-carbohydrate and grain-free ORIJEN foods feature fresh regional ingredients in a biologically appropriate ratio of 70 per cent meat and 30 per cent fruit and vegetables and zero grain.
