FLASHFIBR™ LAUNCHING IN DURHAM REGION: GROWING DURHAM'S KNOWLEDGE-BASED ECONOMY, ATTRACTING INVESTMENT, JOBS, AND FAMILIES TO BECOME ONE OF CANADA'S FIRST SMART REGIONS.
OSHAWA, ON, May 16, 2017 /CNW/ - Durham Region is charting a course to the Lightspeed Economy™!
Durham Region is welcoming FLASHFIBR™ who will launch affordable, lightspeed fibre optic internet, TV, phone and IT products and services, starting with the City of Oshawa, in Summer 2017.
Today's global communications industry boasts tremendous capacity. However, outside of major Canadian city centres, lightspeed fibre-based internet to the door is largely unavailable to 90% of homes and businesses.
"Demand is growing; data is increasing at a pace of 50% year over year, creating oceans of information," says CEO Howard Morton, "yet, Durham's aging infrastructure limits residents and business to a trickle of data. Slow, intermittent internet restricts customer experience and impacts economic development."
Enhancing fibre optic infrastructure is part of Durham Region's strategic vision to fuel economic growth and attract business. With FLASHFIBR's planned $400 million-dollar infrastructure investment the Region will be positioned:
- To provide up to 60x faster, secure, lightspeed internet for residents and businesses at fair pricing;
- To attract data and information-intensive new employers and regional investment;
- To encourage corporate expansion and job creation, innovation and research;
- To continue Durham's digital transformation.
This lightspeed digital infrastructure will connect Durham's thriving sectors including education, advanced manufacturing, and state-of-the-art healthcare facilities to the world. This strengthens the economy, creates jobs and attracts families to the area who want to live, work, and play in Durham's safe, vibrant and thriving cities.
"This is a truly exciting announcement, as the introduction of FLASHFIBR™ will help ensure Durham Region has the tools to remain competitive in our increasingly digital world," notes Hon. Brad Duguid, Minister of Economic Development and Growth for the Province of Ontario. "Right now we are in the midst of an innovation revolution, where rapidly evolving technologies are transforming businesses. The Ontario government is excited to be a partner in this change, with strategic investments in AI, 5G wireless technology, next generation technologies, advanced computing and Autonomous Vehicles. These are truly the infrastructure components of the new, digital economy, and seeing Durham Region take the lead with FLASHFIBR™ is incredibly encouraging."
Lightspeed fibre optics accelerate communities' transition to become high-growth, knowledge-based centres. Information and big data are the currency of the new economy. Delivering dependable and secure lightspeed fibre optic solutions improves the quality of life for residents, fuels growth, revitalizes downtown and business parks and improves municipal operations and community services. With a robust communications infrastructure, residents can feel confident to start a home-based business, telework, securely access information, interact in real-time or access responsive municipal services.
