Vancouver Humane Society launches ad against calf-roping

Full-page ad in Calgary newspaper targets Calgary Stampede event

VANCOUVER, July 4, 2013 /CNW/ - The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) is urging the Calgary Stampede to "have a heart for animals" and drop calf-roping from its rodeo program. The call comes in a full-page ad VHS launched today (July 4) in a Calgary newspaper, Fast Forward Weekly.

The ad shows a photo of a child petting a calf, with the caption "human kindness" above a photo of a roped rodeo calf, with the caption "Stampede blindness."  The ad continues: "C'mon Stampede. Have a heart for animals.  Ban calf-roping."

VHS says the ad contrasts the compassion inherent in basic human kindness with the cruel and callous nature of calf-roping.

"We hope the Calgary Stampede will open its eyes to the anger and disgust many people feel about calf-roping," said VHS spokesperson Peter Fricker. "Dropping this event would go a long way to showing the Stampede really does care about animal welfare."
