Unique Ontario festival puts Native spin on 'world music'

KITCHENER, ON, Nov. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - Native artists from opposite ends of the Americas will meet next week at Ontario's first-ever festival mixing Indigenous and world music.

The Kultrún Indigenous & World Music Festival, November 14-17 in Kitchener, includes Innu reggae from northern Quebec and technology-tinged traditional Mapuche music from Chile, as well as Peru-influenced jazz from Ontario and Haitian hip hop from Montreal.

Kultrún (pronounced cool-troon) represents the dreams of Chilean-born Isabel Cisterna to create a world music festival in Canada that recognizes the contribution of First Nations artists.

Artists appearing at Kultrún include:

•      Juno-nominated Amanda Martinez
•      Innu reggae artist Shauit
•      Montreal hip hop super-group Nomadic Massive
•      Chadian a cappella group H'sao
•      Laetitia Zonzambé from the Central Republic of Africa
•      Best International Indigenous Artists 2013 nominee Joel Maripil
•      International muralists of the Chilean ALAPINTA collective

Kultrún is presented by Neruda Arts, of Kitchener, Ontario. Please visit nerudaarts.ca or kultrun.ca for details.
