TVO's Steve Paikin to be Awarded Honorary Doctorate Today at Laurentian University

TORONTO, June 8, 2012 /CNW/ - Steve Paikin, anchor and senior editor of TVO's flagship current affairs program, The Agenda with Steve Paikin, will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters today at Laurentian University. Paikin will take part in the university's June convocation ceremonies and will address graduates in the English, Education and Communication Studies programs.

"We are proud to honour Steve Paikin as part of our Laurentian family," said University President and Vice-Chancellor Dominic Giroux. "His commitment to citizen engagement through educational broadcasting is inspiring, and his reputation as a journalist is sterling. He is a most deserving recipient of the Doctorate of Letters."

For six years, The Agenda with Steve Paikin has been the gold standard for depth of analysis and thoughtful debate in Canada. As an interviewer and moderator, Steve takes the approach that no topic is too complex - from politics, to religion and culture, science and technology, the economy, the environment and more. He has made a significant contribution to engaging Ontarians in the issues shaping the province.

2012 will mark Steve's 20th year hosting TVO's current affairs programming. Earlier in his career, Steve was a host and correspondent for CBC News and a reporter for the Hamilton Spectator among others.

Steve has moderated the last three federal election debates, and the last two provincial election debates. He has also authored four books including The New Game, Public Triumph, Private Tragedy: The Double Life of John P. Robarts, The Life: The Seductive Call of Politics and The Dark Side: The Personal Price of a Political Life.

"Everyone at TVO is delighted to congratulate Steve on his Honorary Doctorate from Laurentian University," said Lisa de Wilde, Chief Executive Officer of TVO. "Through his in-depth approach and commitment to the highest standards of journalism, Steve brings to life TVO's vision to use media to empower people to be engaged citizens. I can't think of a better role model for students, as they take the next step in life's journey -- especially given Steve's long-standing commitment to public service." \
