TORONTO, May 21, 2014 /CNW/ - For the past eight weeks thousands of
amazing Torontonians, from all walks of life, have united in taking
steps to fight global poverty. On Sunday, May 25th at Metro Hall, David Pecaut Square they will join cities across Canada
in the 30th anniversary World Partnership Walk to increase awareness and celebrate
"I'm so proud of how far we've come. For 30 years, our participants,
volunteers and donors have made a significant contribution to the fight
against poverty," said Fiaz Basaria, Convenor for the World Partnership
Walk in Toronto. "The Walk is a real way for Canadians to spark hope in
communities in some of the poorest parts of the world. Today we
celebrate our efforts to help people across the globe to reach their
full potential and to live with dignity."
An initiative of Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC), the Walk attracts
tens of thousands of Canadians every year united in a common effort to
bring hope and renewal to poor communities living in Asia and Africa.
Last year nearly 40,000 Canadians came together to raise more than $7
million in Calgary, Edmonton, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Ottawa,
Montreal, Regina, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria. 100% of donations
raised go directly to fund AKFC international development projects.
Funds raised by the Walk also help AKFC to leverage additional support
from major partners such as the Government of Canada. This means the
impact of every dollar raised is multiplied many times over.
Since its start 30 years ago, the Walk has raised an incredible $82
million for international development programs and initiatives. It is
the largest and most successful event of its kind in Canada.
This year's Walk will host a number of honourable guests, including the
honourable Carolyn Bennett, P.C., M.P.; John Carmichael, M.P.; the
honourable Reza Moridi, M.P.P.; the honourable Eric Hoskins, M.P.P.;
Councillor and Mayoral candidate Karen Stintz; Councillor John Parker;
Mayoral candidate Olivia Chow (former M.P.), and Mayoral Candidate John
Tory (former M.P.P.).
The World Partnership Walk provides an experience that is both
meaningful and fun for the whole family through activities that inform,
educate, celebrate and entertain. There will be educational activities
at the Global Village educational pavilion, children's games and
entertainment at the Kids Zone, activities in the Seniors Area, a
dynamic entertainment lineup, delicious food and refreshments, as well
as plenty of fun Walk-route activities. The lineup of sponsors is
outstanding, including Scotiabank, BMO Bank of Montreal, KPMG, Oxford
Properties, and many other corporate and community supporters!
Registration and donations can be done securely and easily online by
visiting www.worldpartnershipwalk.com or by calling 1-800-267-2532.
