Survey reveals 91% of Canadians think sports create a unique bond
between a Dad and his children
CALGARY, June 5, 2012 /CNW/ - With Father's Day approaching, people have
a lot to thank Dad for, especially when it comes to sports. A recent
survey commissioned by Sport Chek has revealed many Canadians attribute
their favourite sports memories, teams and passion for sports to their
Dad's influence. Ninety-two per cent of Canadians agree kids cherish
memories of playing sports with their Dads above others and 80 per cent
agree it is important for a Dad to teach his kids sports skills.
"As Canada's largest sporting goods retailer, we provide Canadians with
the equipment they need to live a healthy, active lifestyle," said
Duncan Fulton, Chief Marketing Officer, FGL Sports Ltd. "We are excited
to celebrate Father's Day with Dads across the country and encourage
Canadians to celebrate with fun activities for the whole family."
This survey uncovered the following statistics about the influence of
There's nothing like learning to ride a bike: 61 per cent of Canadians said a child's most memorable sports moment
with their Dad was learning to ride a bike for the first time.
Something to talk about: Most Canadians (92 per cent) agree sports provide an opportunity for
Dads and children to develop a common interest.
Don't miss a chance to play catch: The survey data shows Dads should look for as many opportunities as
possible to get out and be active with their kids. More than half of
Canadians (51 per cent) would have liked to spend more time playing
sports with their Dad when they were kids.
Like father, like son: Kids are more likely to follow or play a sport their Dad is interested
in. Ninety per cent of Canadians say Dads are influential in choosing
the sports kids play and nearly 30 per cent of Canadians support the
same team their Dad does.
Life lessons through sports: Sportsmanship (37 per cent), teamwork (29 per cent) and determination
(15 per cent) are ranked as the most important life lessons kids learn
from their Dads through sports.
Keep it simple for Father's Day gifts: Spending the day at home (24 per cent) and playing their favourite sport
or activity with their family (20 per cent) are top of the list for how
