TORONTO, June 16, 2014 /CNW/ - Marianne Magus, Hospitality program
teacher at the Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School in Caledon will
receive a Fire Safety Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety
Council. The ceremony will be held on June 19, 2014 in Toronto. The
annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding contributions to fire
protection and prevention in Ontario.
Each February and September for the past four years, Magus has invited
the Caledon Fire and Emergency Services to kick off the semesters by
delivering the What's Cooking for Teens fire safety program to her classes. The program provides valuable
information about kitchen fire safety to young people who may soon be
living on their own.
Magus has always been supportive of the program and recognizes the
importance of preparing teens to be fire-safe adults. To date, the What's Cooking for Teens program has been delivered to more than 500 students.
Magus' efforts and those of the fire department are having an impact.
Over the years, Caledon Fire and Emergency Services has had two
students from the Hospitality program enter their public education and
prevention division through the school's co-op program. One of the
students has since chosen to attend the pre-service fire service
program at a community college.
"Thanks to Marianne's efforts, hundreds of students from the Caledon
area will enter adulthood with essential fire and life skills," said
Ted Wieclawek, Chair, Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council.
