Statement from the Honourable Bernard Valcourt on the Mi'kmaq Treaty Day 2013

HALIFAX, Oct. 1, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today:

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to recognize Mi'kmaq Treaty Day 2013. Mi'kmaq Treaty Day provides Nova Scotians with a unique way to pay tribute to the important contributions made by the Mi'kmaq to the province's history, culture and economy.

Treaty Day is about honouring the role of treaties in our shared history and evolving partnerships. Nova Scotia ceremonies began in 1986 with the signing of a proclamation by then Grand Chief Donald Marshall Sr. They are a tribute to the signing of the Peace and Friendship Treaties back in the 1700s, which form the basis of the ongoing relationship between the Mi'kmaq and the Crown.

Today we embark on an important 31 days of reflection. Treaty Day ceremonies mark the beginning of the 20th year in which we've celebrated Mi'kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia. I hope you will all take part in the celebrations that provide us with an opportunity to learn more about Mi'kmaq history, culture and the contributions the Mi'kmaq have made to the province and to Canada as a whole.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish everyone a wonderful Treaty Day."
