Society of Energy Professionals congratulates Energy Minister Chiarelli for protecting Ontario jobs

Minister issues directive to limit offshoring of jobs for Ontario Power Generation and Hydro One

TORONTO, Oct. 28, 2013 /CNW/ - The decision by Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli to limit offshoring of jobs is being welcomed as a positive step by members of the Society of Energy Professionals (The Society).

"The Minister understands that the work we provide is valuable and should stay here in Ontario," said Scott Travers, President of The Society. "We applaud his decision and hope that other ministries in the Wynne government follow his lead."

"At a time when Ontario needs it most, this government has shown a commitment to good local jobs."

Recent submissions by companies bidding on contracts from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Hydro One allowed for the work to be sent offshore to foreign companies. Members of The Society currently do the work in Ontario. "We believe that the work can be done competitively in Ontario," Travers pointed out. "The Minister's directive confirms that he shares that view."

"When it involves taxpayer or ratepayer money, preference should be given to keep the jobs in Ontario," said Travers. "The short-term savings rarely make up for the long-term costs when these jobs are lost. Our people know how to be competitive and deliver value every day. We appreciate the vote of confidence in their work."

The Society of Energy Professionals represents 8,000 knowledge workers and supervisors that are responsible for the generation, transmission and regulation of energy in Ontario in both the broader public and private sectors.
