TORONTO, Oct. 28, 2013 /CNW/ - This November, Shaw Media observes Remembrance Day with a full schedule of Canadian original
programming. With new documentaries telling first-person stories from
Canadian veterans, live coverage of 2013 Remembrance Day events on Global News and four full days of Canadian original programming on HISTORY, Shaw Media is proud to offer an unparalleled line-up of programs
paying tribute to the men and women who have served and continue to
serve Canada during times of war, armed conflict and peace.
From Friday, November 8 through Monday, November 11, HISTORY's schedule is dedicated to Canadian produced-programming
recognizing Canadians and the wars in which they have served. The new
documentary 28 Heroes marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, and sheds light on one
Canadian platoon's heroic battle. The premiere of the documentary Sector Sarajevo takes an insider look at another aspect of Canadian veterans'
contributions by exploring what it means to be a peacekeeper in a
conflict zone. And the documentary series War Story, which premiered last year, returns to the HISTORY line-up with eight
new episodes. The Days of Remembrance schedule includes other
groundbreaking Canadian programming, including Dieppe: Uncovered, D-Day to Victory, Passchendaele, The Great Escape: Secrets Revealed and Storming Juno.
"HISTORY is committed to telling our veterans' stories in the most
authentic way possible - through the personal testimonies of the men
and women who have served our country. This year we have continued our
tradition of partnering with the most talented producers and directors
to give our veterans a voice and to bring these important Canadian
stories to our viewers," said Barbara Williams, Senior Vice President, Content, Shaw Media.
Global News pays tribute to the heroes who served to protect our country with its
annual Canada Remembers coverage special. This hour-long, commercial free coverage will begin Monday, November 11 at 10:30am ET/7:30am PT and will be helmed by Global National Anchor & Executive Editor Dawna Friesen. Global News' Chief Political Correspondent Tom Clark will report live from the National War Memorial ceremony in Ottawa to
give viewers a first-hand look at the events happening as we honour and
remember our veterans who served Canada during war. GlobalNews.ca will live-stream the Canada Remembers special, and host exclusive Remembrance Day coverage and feature
In addition, Global News' investigative news magazine program 16x9 will air a commemorative special Saturday, November 9 focusing on the stories of three ordinary people who did extraordinary
things in three different wars. The special tells the historic stories
of a 90 year old woman who risked her life to save others in the Second
World War, a man who spent 42 years behind bars in a prison in
Stalinist Russia during the Cold War and the Canadian lieutenant
featured in HISTORY's 28 Heroes who was charged with leading a group of 28 Canadian soldiers to safety
against all odds during the Korean War.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, and the Canadian government
has declared 2013 the Year of the Korean War Veteran. Marking this
important anniversary, HISTORY's new documentary 28 Heroes premieres Monday, November 11 at 9pm ET/PT. The Korean War is the third deadliest conflict in Canadian history. Of
the 26,000 Canadians who served, 516 died in service, 1,235 were
injured or missing in action and 33 were taken as prisoners of war.
Told in the first person by Korean War veterans Ed Mastronardi and Red
Butler, 28 Heroes brings to life the harrowing exploits of one Canadian platoon who
fought to hold their vulnerable outpost in the face of repeated
Communist attacks. Using interview material from both Canadian and
Chinese veterans and dramatic recreations, 28 Heroes reconstructs the battle for the Song-gok Spur on November 2, 1951
moment-by-moment to create an intimate portrait of what it was like to
live, fight and die in Canada's forgotten war.
Premiering Sunday, November 10 at 9pm ET/PT, Sector Sarajevo is the untold story of Canada's deadly mission in a city under
siege. In summer 1992, the Yugoslav city of Sarajevo descended into a
living hell. Torn by civil war, it became a killing zone for three
years, with thousands of its citizens killed. Canadian soldiers were
sent in to spearhead a UN peacekeeping mission, but in Sarajevo, there
was no peace to keep. This is the inside story of a small group of men
doing their duty in the midst of madness. And for the first time, key
players tell their story in their own words.
New episodes of HISTORY's documentary series War Story air Friday, November 8 through Monday, November 11 at 8:00pm and 8:30pm
ET/PT. The series is built around interviews with Canadian war veterans,
looking beyond the details of the engagement, the weapons and the
tactics of war and instead providing a moving look at what it was like
for young people to cross oceans and face death on foreign
battlefields. This year, their stories take viewers to Hong Kong,
Vietnam and the North Atlantic.
