Science matters at GrowCanada conference

CALGARY, Dec. 4, 2013 /CNW/ - A trip to the grocery store isn't as simple as it once was.

Consumers want to feel empowered. They want to know how their food is grown and raised. Dr. Ron Doering, Gowling Lafleur Henderson, LLP and past president of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), will share his thoughts on the complex role of science in policy-making, risk analysis and public discourse, especially as it relates to the food we eat.

"Ontario's corn, soybean, and wheat farmers take pride in growing safe, nutritious food for consumers," says Barry Senft, CEO of Grain Farmers of Ontario who is sponsoring the presentation. "We look forward to hearing Dr. Doering share his perspective and experience within the CFIA and help increase the dialogue around food safety."

Doering practices agriculture and food law.  His current research interest is the relationship between science and policy. His presentation will take place at 9:50 a.m.

The annual GrowCanada conference is Canada's premier agricultural event, providing a platform to connect with industry leaders from across the country, explore cutting edge insight and build a stronger, more vibrant agricultural sector that ultimately contributes to a better world.

This year's conference under the theme Ag matters, Be bold, act now, is being held at the Hyatt Regency Calgary from December 3 to 5.
