CHARLOTTETOWN, June 2, 2014 /CNW/ - A call to find 100 young Canadians ready to think about Canada's past and help define the country's future was launched today in Prince Edward Island. Starting June 1st, Canadians between the ages of 19 and 24 are being encouraged to apply online to represent their province or territory as delegates to the New Canada Conference in Prince Edward Island. The conference will take place the first week of September 2014 as part of PEI 2014 Founders Week.
"The New Canada Conference will be a flagship program during Founders Week," says PEI 2014 Executive Director, Penny Walsh McGuire. "The vision of Confederation was first articulated in Prince Edward Island and we are delighted to invite a new generation of Canadians to visit Charlottetown to think about our country's future."
Between August 31st and September 3rd, the 100 New Canada Conference delegates will hear from leading Canadians, share their perspectives, and work in eight teams — each with its own theme— to produce an "idea book" concerning the choices, forces, and ideas that will shape Canada's future. Representing every corner of the country, the delegates will symbolize the breadth of interests and exceptional diversity of a new generation of Canadians.
Founders Week takes place August 28th to September 7th and coincides with the week in 1864 when the Fathers of Confederation participated in the historic Charlottetown Conference. The New Canada Conference will take place within that same week and much like the Charlottetown Conference 150 years ago, will involve delegates from various parts of the country coming together to share ideas and forge a shared vision. Further information on the New Canada Conference can be found at www.ncc-cnc.ca.
In 2014, Canadians will mark the 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which led the way to the creation of Canada. PEI 2014 Inc. is facilitating the planning, promotion and implementation of the Sesquicentennial celebrations. The PEI 2014 celebrations are made possible through generous support from the Government of Canada, the Government of Prince Edward Island, and the City of Charlottetown. The year-long and province-wide PEI 2014 program of events will honour the past, celebrate the present and plan a bold tomorrow.
