Opening of the « Macredie - Works of Art » exhibition
SAINT-CONSTANT, QC, June 1, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Exporail, the Canadian Railway Museum, invites you to come and enjoy the world of Alice Macredie (1913-2006), until October 21, 2012 at a temporary exhibition entitled « Macredie - Works of Art ». This exhibition features watercolors painted by the artist in memory of her father's achievements: John Robert Clarke Macredie (1879-1932), was an engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway in charge of construction of several bridges and tunnels in Western Canada.
An artist's view of a father's work
Alice Rhea Macredie was born in Calgary in 1913, while her father worked on the construction of the Ronalane Bridge, in Alberta. No personal memories remain from Alice Macredie's frequent trips to the construction sites. After graduating from the University Saskatoon in 1932, she worked for the better part of her life as a draughtsman for the Gulf Canada oil company. A few years before retiring, she decided to illustrate her father's story: that is when she produced scores of watercolors inspired by photographs contained in the many reports drawn up by her father between 1904 and 1919.
Once she had immersed herself in the light and atmosphere of the various locations Alice Macredie combined art, history and engineering and brought these old black & white snapshots to life through her watercolors. Her collection illustrates a family history: Macredie, father and daughter.
« He believed the country had a great future and he trained himself to take part
in the building of roads, tunnels and bridges. » (Alice Macredie)
