Ontario Science Centre to present the fifth annual Ontario Science Centre Innovation in Mas' Award at the 2014 Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto

TORONTO, May 22, 2014 /CNW/ - Tune the steel pans! The Ontario Science Centre will again celebrate Caribbean culture through its continued partnership with the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto. In addition to special Carnival-themed programming at the Science Centre and at various sites throughout the Carnival, the Science Centre will present the coveted Ontario Science Centre Innovation in Mas' Award for costume design at the King and Queen Competition and Show for the fifth consecutive year.

"The Innovation in Mas' award was created in 2010 to put a spotlight on the science of Mas', drawing attention to the processes involved in costume-making and recognizing the scientific merit of the engineers of these creative masterpieces," said Dr. Hooley McLaughlin, Chief Science Officer, Ontario Science Centre.  "The Science Centre serves as a conduit between science and technology and the public. This award makes the connection between science and the Carnival: mathematics and physics inform both the musical rhythms and the mechanics behind the costumes we'll experience at the King and Queen Competition and Show."

The Ontario Science Centre Innovation in Mas' Award recognizes innovation, art and scientific merit in costume design at the King and Queen Competition and Show on July 31, 2014, which is renowned for showcasing colourful, vibrant and elaborate costumes.

Further connecting the public to the science that can be found everywhere, the Ontario Science Centre presents the Canadian debut of The Science of Rock 'N' Roll, which explores how innovation in science and technology have influenced how we make, listen and share music. This interactive exhibition opens June 11 and runs until October 26, 2014.
