Ontario budget puts people first

TORONTO, May 2, 2013 /CNW/ - Responding to the release of Ontario's 2013 Budget, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) noted that the budget provides for continued progress and stability to benefit all Ontarians.

The budget continues to address Ontario's fiscal challenges by providing a balanced and fair approach to deficit reduction that works to strengthen economic recovery, rather than undermine it.

In its pre-budget brief, OECTA urged the government to move towards 'true consultation and genuine dialogue to solicit creative solutions'. OECTA is pleased that the Wynne Government has engaged with opposition leaders and stakeholders to solicit creative ideas, while respecting public services.

"We have seen a new tone of openness and collegiality in this new government," says O'Dywer. "We saw this in the recent negotiations with teacher federations and we see this again with the Ontario budget."

"Clearly the government has listened to the opposition and to Ontarians in crafting this budget. It shows what can be accomplished if people and parties focus on making minority government work for the common good of all Ontarians," added O'Dwyer.

OECTA represents the 45,000 professional women and men who teach all grades in publicly funded English Catholic schools in Ontario.
