Sandhu beat 64 finalists from across the country to become Canada's
next teen beauty and goodwill ambassador
TORONTO, July 24, 2012 /CNW/ - On Saturday evening, 18-year-old Megha Sandhu was crowned Miss Teen Canada-World 2012, beating 64 of Canada's best and brightest teenaged women for the
prestigious title. The show was a must-attend event in Canada's young
entertainment world, featuring hosts Luke Bilyk from Degrassi: The Next Generation and a special performance by Multi-Platinum Artist Karl Wolf. At the event, a cheque for $60,000 was presented to the Free The Children orgainization, the money was raised by the collective fundraising
efforts of all the finalists.
It takes a lot more than a pretty face to win the title of Miss Teen Canada-World and Megha Sandhu definitely embodies the complete package of beauty, brains and
confidence - not to mention a signature runway strut as she was also
awarded with "Best in Runway" at the pageant. Megha just recently
finished her first year in Health Sciences at Marianopolis College in
Westmount. A real science buff, Megha is always on the lookout for new
learning opportunities to better understand the scientific world. In
2011, she worked alongside her mentor at the Meakins-Christie
Laboratories of McGill University, where she observed the results of an
experiment about asthma, earning her a silver medal at her school's
Science Fair. Enthusiastic about the performing arts, she models, acts
and does Indian classical dancing, Bharat Natyam. Passionate for
sports, Megha has played on six inter-scholastic teams including;
soccer, basketball, cross country, track and field, flag-football and
the Halo road race.
"I am looking forward to the wide variety of opportunities that I will
experience throughout my reign, things that would have never been
possible before," said Megha Sandhu, Miss Teen Canada-World 2012. "I also hope to make a difference with special-needs children in the
school environment. My brother was diagnosed with autism at a very
young age so this cause is very near and dear to my heart."
A strong charitable component is central to the contest and Miss Teen Canada-World has the opportunity to work closely with the Free the Children charity throughout her yearlong reign. Megha will visit schools and
development projects in under-developed nations for mission trips and
will have the opportunity interact with the children directly affected
by Free the Children. This year, Megha will also have the opportunity to work closely with Cardiac Kids, a charity dedicated to raising much-needed funds for children who are
suffering from congenital heart disease.
Among other prizes, Megha will receive over $30,000 in cash and prizes,
including $4000 cash from the MTC-W organization, a professional
photoshoot with renowned photographer Richard Sibbald, an assortment of handbags from Jeanne Lottie, a competition wardrobe from Bells and Bows bridal, a trip to Kenya with Free The Children, a Caribbean Grad Trip courtesy of S-Trip, and a $1000 Scholarship to the Toronto Academy of Acting.
Megha takes over the role of Miss Teen Canada-World from the reigning title-holder, Lauren Howe. Through her savvy social media involvement, Canada can follow Megha on
her blog at wwww.missteencanadaworld.com as she begins her reign, inspiring other teens to get involved and make
a difference. Her first event will be representing Canada at the
international Miss Teenager Pageant in Guatemala on August 19th, 2012.
