Minister Leitch Encourages Canadians to Participate in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

OTTAWA, Nov. 25, 2013 /CNW/ - Today, the Hon. Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Status of Women and Minister of Labour, issued the following statement to recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence in Canada:

"Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence in Canada.

These 16 Days of Activism serve to remind Canadians that violence, and the threat of violence, are daily realities for many women and girls. Gender-based violence is not just a women's issue - it affects us all - and we must all be part of the solution.

Ending all forms of violence against women and girls is a priority for our Government. Since 2007, we have invested more than $62 million in funding for over three hundred projects to end violence against women and girls.

During the next sixteen days, I encourage all Canadians to take action by attending a vigil, observing a moment of silence, or wearing a white ribbon. Whatever action you take, it will show your support for victims of violence and help inspire change, not just today, but throughout the year."
