Making a World of Difference: CWF Brings Marine, Youth and Polar Issues to World Conservation Congress

OTTAWA, Sept. 10, 2012 /CNW/ - The Canadian Wildlife Federation will emphasize marine and polar education and lend its support to a world youth movement at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress in Jeju, South Korea Sept. 6-15.

"Without education, there will be no conservation," said Wade Luzny, CEO Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Wildlife Federation. "We have to engage future generations now. We have to be open to innovation, embrace new technology and build new partnerships with youth that embed a conservation ethic into everything they undertake."

CWF will play an integral role at the IUCN World Conservation Congress Blue Planet Pavilion, hosting an interactive presentation and several receptions focused on CWF's innovative marine and polar education programs.

CWF is also hosting a knowledge café on open education and supporting a motion on formalizing youth involvement and intergenerational partnerships for conservation. This motion calls on the Director General to identify opportunities for conservation action focused on intergenerational partnerships of youth, educators and the conservation community.

CWF is very active in the Canadian Committee for IUCN (CCIUCN). For example, CWF serves on the board of directors and consults on conservation policy in Canada.

The congress is the world's largest and most important conservation event. Held every four years, it aims to improve how we manage our natural environment for human, social and economic development.

"We have to take a holistic approach to conservation," Luzny said. "We can't afford to isolate ourselves by only worrying about our own backyards and not taking care of the global ecosystem. In order to ensure the success of this comprehensive approach, CWF is honoured to work with the IUCN. Together we can make a world of difference."
