Leading voices in the struggle against the tar sands speak out in new and timely book, A Line in the Tar Sands

TORONTO, Sept. 24, 2014 /CNW/ - Dr. James Hansen of NASA says that "Avoiding 'game over for climate' requires drawing a line in the tar sands sludge." In a new and timely book, A Line in the Tar Sands: Struggles for Environmental Justice, activists are speaking out against the enormous environmental and human cost of tar sands "development." With a forward by Naomi Klein and Bill McKibben, Dr. Hansen says this book "makes clear why and how this tar sands quagmire could be the beginning of the end for the mighty fossil fuel industry."

In this collection of 28 essays we hear the stories and voices of struggles across Canada and the United States, from indigenous activists, academics, and organizations fighting against formidable political and economic interests.  Co-editor and 350.org activist Joshua Kahn Russell says "The Alberta Tar Sands are the largest industrial extraction project on Earth. Civil society groups and peoples' movements from around the world have risen up to challenge this threat livelihoods, indigenous rights, water, and climate stability. With leading voices from around the world, the book offers stories of resistance, highlighting many streams of activist campaigns around the tar sands, as well as technical analysis, and a vision for transition to a sustainable world."
