Professor Fahima Nekka Awarded Pharmacometrics Grant Aimed At Training Students And Research Fellows in Emerging Field
MONTREAL, Aug. 19, 2014 /CNW/ - inVentiv Health Clinical, a leading global supplier of drug development services, announced today its support of an unrestricted grant in pharmacometrics submitted by the University of Montreal to the Industrial Research Chair Grant Program of the National Science and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC). The grant serves to support the growth of an emerging scientific field that has the potential to improve drug development.
Professor Fahima Nekka of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Montreal is the Chair Grant recipient. The grant allows Professor Nekka to develop specific training for students and research fellows in the field of pharmacometrics. As part of the training, students and postdoctoral fellows may have the chance to work alongside with experts at inVentiv Health Clinical.
To streamline the drug development process and avoid costly studies that may ultimately fail, biopharmaceutical companies are constantly looking for ways to make better decisions faster. Pharmacometrics, the science of interpreting and describing clinical pharmacology in a quantitative fashion, can provide the insights needed to make informed decisions in the exploratory stages of clinical trials and throughout the development cycle. While companies are increasingly integrating pharmacometrics into the drug development process, there is a lack of experienced pharmacometricians and limited number of academic training programs.
"The support of the program and partnership with the University of Montreal is another example of inVentiv's continued investment in scientific research," said Riaz Bandali, inVentiv Health Clinical President – Early Stage. "Pharmacometrics is a key part of the inVentiv clinical pharmacology service offering and this unique collaboration provides access to top experts in a complex and multidisciplinary field of science".
Through this program, students and post-doctoral fellows may assist inVentiv Health Clinical with some client projects that require pharmacometric modeling. These students will develop their own pharmacometrics skills and continue developing the science of pharmacometrics while gaining valuable work experience on how pharmacometrics is performed in an industrialized, regulated environment.
The partnership between inVentiv Health Clinical and the University of Montreal leverages the long-standing relationship between the two organizations. Through this grant inVentiv and the University of Montreal will help achieve the ultimate deliverable for the pharmaceutical industry - the highest quality data for better decision making.
