Harper Government Supports 2012 International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Cup Calgary

CALGARY, Feb. 11, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), Earl Dreeshen, Member of Parliament (Red Deer), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to the 2012 International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Cup Calgary, which is being held at Canada Olympic Park from February 6 to 11, 2012.

"Our Government is pleased to support Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton, through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, for the 2012 International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Cup Calgary," said Minister of State Gosal. "It is always exciting to have Canada's top bobsleigh and skeleton athletes compete against other world-class athletes here at home as they continue their pursuit of athletic excellence."

"Hosting international sport events like this World Cup not only benefits Canadian athletes and the Canadian sport system, but also has a positive impact on the community and the local economy," said Mr. Dreeshen. "I commend all the competing athletes for their determination and dedication to their sport and thank all the volunteers and organizers who helped to make the event a success."

"Hosting international events at home provides Canadian athletes with a competitive advantage while inspiring the next generation to live healthier and more active lives, and ultimately growing our sports," said Don Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton (BCS). "We applaud the Government of Canada for their support in helping us showcase our sport and country to the world."

Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton is a non-profit organization and the national governing body for the sports of bobsleigh and skeleton in Canada.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $75,000 was provided to Bobsleigh Skeleton Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada also committed $2.8 million in 2011-2012 to Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada through the Sport Support Program.
