Government of Canada invests in safety at Tofino-Ucluelet-Long Beach Airport

TOFINO, BC, July 4, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, together with Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Alberni, today announced funding for a safety improvement project at the Tofino-Ucluelet-Long Beach Airport.

The Tofino-Ucluelet-Long Beach Airport is receiving $248,200 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) for the replacement of a runway sweeper. The new sweeper will ensure the timely and effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways.

"Our government is committed to the safety and security of all Canadians," said Minister Van Loan. "This investment will help support the efficient movement of goods and passengers, helping to ensure the right conditions for economic growth and long-term prosperity."

"The Tofino-Ucluelet-Long Beach Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said Dr. Lunney. "This funding will enhance the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the communities and businesses on Vancouver Island."

"The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District welcomes ACAP funding in support of our airport's continued safety and improved operations," said Cindy Solda, Chair.  "The Tofino-Ucluelet-Long Beach Airport continues to grow and prosper as a hub for the West Coast of Vancouver Island, serving residents, tourism and industry that have come to rely on the service and efficiency which it provides."

To date, through ACAP, the Tofino-Ucluelet-Long Beach Airport has received more than $4.4 million for two projects, including today's announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $606 million for 751 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.

Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than one million net new jobs created since July 2009.
