Company Urges Residents with Flood Damage to Have Heating and Cooling Systems Checked before Turning Them On
TORONTO, July 9, 2013 /CNW/ - In the aftermath of yesterday's record-breaking flooding, MacLeans quoted commuter Gilbert Bae who was worried about flooding in the basement of his Mississauga home as he waited several hours for a GO train back. "I'm feeling bad," he said. "My wife keeps calling me, but I cannot do anything."
Doug Crump, regional manager for Mersey Service Experts at 1662 Midland Avenue, Scarborough, ON, said that this type of basement flooding can cause damage to furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners and water heaters that run on gas, oil or electricity. "Any unit that has been partially or completely submerged must have the electrical power supply and the gas or oil supply disconnected immediately and be inspected before it can be used again to avoid further property damage or personal injury," said Crump. "Flood waters can cause corrosion of metal parts, refrigerant leaks, clogs due to debris and other damage that will cause a unit to not function properly. This damage may not be visible without close inspection, which should be done by a certified technician. And it may not be visible immediately. The unit may work for a few weeks, and then fail."
